Mission Report: Supplies and Intelligence from the Station. (August 2702)

Secured supplies from following:
- Otherworldly Attire (owned by Breda, shardbearer friendly, but she wants the steep price of 5 gold marks for large bulk orders of clothing every season, I managed to haggle her down from 10.)
- The Butcher's shop (owned by Gilbert. He was indifferent about the war, but after talking to him a few times he decided he doesn't want anyone else to lose their family like he lost his. He said he'll provide rations if we need them.)

Intelligence:
Lily, the daughter of the Seelie-aligned owner of Shardbearers' Books doesn't want the Seelie to win, but doesn't seem too sure otherwise. I've known her for a few weeks now, so she seems to trust me, but I wouldn't trust her with too much true information. She seems to have trouble keeping secrets, I didn't tell her the real reason why when I asked about what she'd heard.

Most of it was useless, but she did tell me about the shops I got the supplies from, and their owners, so I knew how to approach each one. She mentioned most shardbearers she overheard, even Seelie, are worried about the Void, or if they'll ever get home. Some of the Seelie shardbearers talked about a couple of other shardbearers who want the Void to destroy everything, which is a surprise to them. She said there's hope Leathann can be saved, too. The two other shopkeepers I talked to (Gilbert and Helin, who runs a smithy, though her prices were too high and she refused to negotiate, so I didn't ask for supplies) both told me similar things.

Most of the shopkeepers I spoke with were neutral about the war, but a lot of them didn't want to die, either. Some seemed reluctant to choose a side at all, and others were openly passionate in their beliefs. Breda said she wished both courts, or at least the shardbearers from both, would stop fighting and work together to find a way to stop the Void without destroying the possibility of new worlds being created. I didn't tell any of the people I talked to why I was asking or who I was with, but Breda was the only one I would've considered telling, she might be worth recruiting. She was also discreet about the supplies and left them out of her books. Bellamy Blake pointed me in her direction when I asked him about some of the shops.

Since the Station is neutral territory, it isn't surprising most of the people aren't loyal to either court, but I found some anti-shardbearer sentiment there, too. There's a few shops with signs saying shardbearers aren't aloud, but worse is there rumours about strange men visiting some of the bars, usually in the mornings, and usually they disappear right after, probably with magic. Helin and Lily both told me about this, though Helin wanted money to tell me any more. After I gave her a couple silver coins she pointed me toward a bar run by a man named Hobson.

I spent two nights visiting Hobson's bar, a lot of people talked there, and one of the regulars mentioned it was popular with 'my lot'--shardbearers, not Unseelie. He said people from both courts came there and that Hobson had wards cast against violence. Most of what I heard people talk about didn't make sense without context, but Hobson was there every night, and I'm sure he had that. It took some time, and some conversation, but I eventually got him to talk about the men who come to see him every month. It turns out they're part of a group who hates shardbearers. He also wouldn't speak their name, and neither did I, even though he claimed he'd warded the place against anyone hearing. I suspect it's the Cult he's working for, but he wouldn't say. He was obviously scared for his life, but he said he'd get out of it if there was a way. I didn't promise him anything, but we might consider helping him. He's neutral like Breda is, only he wasn't as open about it.

INCENTIVE/FIT:
Simon's not really the easily trusting type, at least not when it comes to the living; as far as he's concerned they've lied to him and manipulated him for their own gain. So it is worth noting that he's going to skeptical when the city representatives appear and make him this offer, he'll probably have to be shown that Kieren is already in the city in order to accept it and make the deal, too. He will, however, be glad to do it at that point because it'll mean being somewhere where Kieren will be safe from the Undead Liberation Army, and Kieren's sister is in the city, too, so he won't be completely cut off from his family.

As to his actual incentive, although Simon's motivation changes at the end of the series to wanting to stay with Kieren and look after him, that doesn't mean he no longer wants the persecution of the undead to stop, or that he wouldn't want to find ways to fight back against it, just in less violent ways, as Kieren has been a positive influence. So in light of this his primary incentive would be asking for the undead back his world to have the same rights as freedoms as the living and not to not be persecuted anymore.

If he could also take a secondary incentive, which he'd stay in the city longer to fulfill, Simon would like very much to either have his mother (who he killed when he first rose from the grave) come back to life, or to have a chance to see her one more time and apologize for killing her, if nothing else. My headcanon (somewhat confirmed by Series 2, Episode 1's script) is that Simon hoped his mother would return during the Second Rising and this is one of the reasons he wants it. That and his loyalty to the ULA and his desire to see things get people for undead people.

I think he would also ask for Amy to be saved, since he does blame himself for what happened to her, at least a little bit, because he brought her back to Roarton and lied to her about the true nature of the mission he took her on. However, if the representatives inform him that this is Kieren's incentive, he'll be alright with not asking for it.

PERSONALITY:
One of the first things that anyone will notice about Simon Monroe is his seemingly unwavering devotion to his beliefs. Gary Kendall refers to him as an extremist, which isn't too terribly far off the mark for most of the second season. He is one of the Twelve Disciples of the Undead Prophet, the leader of the Undead Liberation Army whose goals not only include bringing about a Second Rising of the undead to increase their numbers, but also fighting back against what they perceive to be human oppression. They sometimes employ terrorist tactics to do this, such as at the beginning of season two when they attack and kill people on a train by taking pills to revert to their rabid state temporarily.

Although we never see Simon participate in or instigate anything as extreme as the above, he does brush it away by telling Kieren that atrocities happen on both sides, using an example of a similar attack carried out by a human against undead. It's important to point out, though, that Simon doesn't directly advocate killing people to anyone. He's frequently more words than action, and the things that he does try to do involve helping undead people more than anything else. He is very good at convincing people to join his cause and winning their adoration with his charisma and his speeches. However his words do inspire some unsavoury actions, such as when Zoe and Brian let loose the caged rabid undead at the health clinic, though Simon never finds out about this. He also sends Zoe and the others to the graveyard on the expected eve of the Second Rising where they nearly come to blows with a group of Roarton's humans, and it's implied their actions are partly because of Simon's instructions. I wouldn't say it's so much that he is against violence toward humans as he'd rather wait to engage in it when it's smart to do so, when the odds are in the undead's favour since he very likely knows the Second Rising would result in open conflict with the humans.

The two times where we see him engage in violence are both against Gary Kendall in defence of his fellow undead, Kieren in those two instances. We can see from this that he's very protective of his "in group," also shown when he stands up to Gary after he told the PDS Giveback participants (who are essentially working for free, which Simon sees as slave labour) they could take a break. Another example of this is his anger over how the rabid undead are being treated at the health clinic, the way they are kept in a cage and yanked around by a guiding stick that's attached to their necks, all with little care from humans running the place.

However, Simon isn't really the sort of person who is quick to anger, and the only times that we see him violently lash out or come close to it are in defence of Kieren or other undead. Otherwise he's more careful, more of a planner, and the anger that he does display is often quiet. Although he could've, he doesn't encourage the undead to resist violently when they are conscripted into the PDS Giveback Scheme, as he probably knows that would make things worse and not accomplish anything. His acts of rebellion against "the man" are more measured, the sort of things that are designed to make Roarton's undead feel better about themselves. He encourages them to break the rules by not wearing their cover-up (it's who they are, he thinks, they shouldn't be ashamed of it) and he and Amy go to the Legion without theirs specifically to exercise their right to go where they want.

Simon wasn't always like this, though. When he is first brought back from his rabid state, he is ashamed of what he is and even allows the doctors to experiment on him in order to "get better," as he says. He doesn't want his family to see him as he is and considers it a betrayal when he is forced to by the people at the treatment centre. When he leaves, not wanting to subject himself to further experiments, and his father kicks him out in a rage over how he killed his mother while he was rabid, he finds his way to the ULA. Here he gains a family and acceptance, so it's easy to see why he becomes so devoted to the Prophet and why he wants to spread that acceptance to others like him. This kind of familial love is likely not something he had much of in life, his father probably kicked him out or he ran away previously over his drug addiction, on top of him suffering from depression and the social stigma he may have faced from that and from being gay. Simon doesn't seem to think much of his life (his quoting of the Yeats poem for his desired epithet implies he considers it a waste), but as an undead his depression is gone and with the ULA he becomes proud of who and what he is.

He encourages others to share in that pride and to be themselves instead of what humans want them to be. He tells them to throw off their shame, even referring to it as a shackle. He claims that sharing the stories of their rising will help them achieve this. Despite this, and all the Undead Prophet's talk about not feeling ashamed people they killed, Simon keeps a photograph of his mother, which shows that he still feels guilty about what he did to her. Perhaps he believes that she will come back during the Second Rising, so he'll be able to apologize to her and everything will be alright.

It's rather telling that we never see Simon share anything about his life to anyone except Kieren, he doesn't say anything about what happened with his mother and only hints at his ordeal at the treatment center. Even Amy, who he considers a close friend, doesn't seem to know him as anything more than 'one of the Twelve Disciples of the Undead Prophet.' This identity is like a role that he plays for Roarton's undead, although he does believe in the things he says, as previously stated. Still, there is a certain level of manipulation to this, even if it's not malicious; he asks the others to share their rising stories because he's searching for the First Risen, but he never tells them that and puts a different spin on it so they will be more willing to share. He keeps the true nature of his mission secret and not even Amy or Kieren know why he's really come to Roarton. He even outright lies to Amy when she asks him what the Prophet said about their mission. So he is not the most truthful person, and he can be underhanded about achieving his goals.

Simon is also someone who cares very much about making the people that he loves happy. He displays this with Amy by allowing her to think that the two of them are involved, despite his having no romantic interest in her. He is oblivious to the idea that he's leading her on and when confronted with it he rejects that outright, saying that Amy needs love so he shows her love. Ultimately Amy's feelings are hurt by this, though that is not Simon's intention. This desire to make the people he cares about happy is exemplified much more with Kieren.

Simon's romantic relationship with Kieren changes him and they both rub off on each other. In Kieren he finds someone who he believes he has a connection with (likely because they both have the shared life experience of being depression sufferers) and he is quick to try and start a relationship, despite having only known Kieren for a few days at the time. Kieren is the first person we see Simon open up to, and also the first person we see influencing Simon to a large degree. He manages to easily talk Simon out of his plan to free the caged rabids at the health clinic so they can take them and medicate them themselves.

Although he tries to reject Kieren (“I was wrong about you from the start.”) after these events, utterly disgusted with how Kieren makes no attempt to change the status quo, he is unable to resist when Kieren comes back to him and they kiss. After this he chooses to separate his beliefs from Kieren, making no further attempts to convince him to accept his philosophy. More than that, Simon opens his mind and decides to try out Kieren's idea of 'normal,' donning cover-up and going for lunch with Kieren and his family. He is so set on making sure it's a nice normal occasion that he doesn't even rise to the bait when Gary, who is there with Kieren's sister, starts telling stories about how he killed undead during The Rising. No, it's Kieren who gets angry about this, even when Simon tells him to leave it alone, and Kieren who tells the story of rising from his grave the way Simon had encouraged the others to do. This occasion is also when Simon comes to believe Kieren is the First Risen, which only exacerbates the way he worships Kieren and how he's placed him on a pedestal. This probably stems from what Simon sees as Kieren's inner strength; he's been through so much, subjected to so many awful things and yet he's still a good, kind person who isn't really cynical, he hasn't been beaten down by his experiences. Also he manages to fight off Blue Oblivion (the drug undead can take to temporarily become rabid) before he hurts anyone, which causes Simon to describe him as “incredible.”

Although he tries to keep Kieren and his beliefs separate, Simon is unable to do this when he is ordered to kill Kieren to bring about the Second Rising. Of course he becomes incredibly conflicted between his devotion to Kieren and his loyalty to the Prophet, but ultimately his love for Kieren wins out and this positive influence on him culminates in Simon rejecting the Prophet's religious teachings and the ULA's primary goal of a Second Rising. The script for episode six also implies that Simon's decision is influenced by his witnessing Kieren's father telling his rabid son that he loves him no matter what he is, something Simon never got from his own father. So not only does Simon risk his life to save Kieren (he takes a bullet meant for Kieren that could've easily hit him in the head), but he acts probably knowing that he will be branded a traitor and people will be sent to kill him.

Finally, it should be noted that Simon's betrayal of the ULA doesn't indicate that he's abandoned every belief he ever gained from them. He still believes in undead rights and would fight for them and is still proud of what he is, but his beliefs have been moderated. And of course Kieren comes before all that, as the series leaves us with a Simon who is determined to protect him above all else. Although he's still not entirely truthful, as he avoids telling Kieren about his mission to kill him, or why he went into the city or that the ULA now think Kieren is the First Risen; basically anything that would likely make Kieren angry with him.

COURT ALLIANCE & REASONING:
Unseelie: Simon's position as a member o the ULA, an organization fighting for change in a radical fashion, would put him firmly in the 'change is good' camp. As would his frequent willingness to break the rules and live by his own, which lines up with the idea that honour is a lie. Even if where he's coming from with that isn't specifically about chivalry, he'd still be against codes created by one group to control others or put unnecessary, conservative restrictions on them, considering he has personally been a victim of that kind of thing.

Whereas the Seelie would probably look at Simon's betrayal of the people that he'd long been devoted to with contempt, this decision lines up well with the Unseelie's belief and passion before duty. As well, he regularly scoffs at the authorities in Roarton, breaking both established and unwritten rules.

So, considering the Unseelie dedication to change and their willingness to bring about that change by any means necessary, as well as living by their own rules, and putting the things they want to do about what they should do, I think Simon would fit right in there.

ABILITIES:
- Undead: He's a zombie! Which means that he:
   - Cannot be killed except by a piercing blow to the brain, though other wounds that he receives will also not be healed and will be permanent.
   - Has no physical sensations, meaning that he can't feel pain or cold/warmth but he also can't feel it if anyone touches him. If other people touch him they will find his skin cold.
   - Doesn't need to eat or drink, in fact he's physically incapable of doing either and vomiting would result if he tries. Though he does seem to require sleep.
   - Basically he's like a reanimated corpse with a brain that's made to work again by the daily doses of the drug he has to take to keep from reverting back to the mindless state he was in when he rose from the grave and wanted to eat brains.

- Minor combat abilities: On two occasions (in episodes one and six of series two) we see Simon have two very short fights with Gary, beating him both times. This shows that he can handle himself in combat, though probably not against anyone with a large amount of training or experience. He does know a few moves, though.

Even Amy, who he considers a close friend, doesn't seem to know him as anything more than 'one of the Twelve Disciples of the Undead Prophet.' This identity is like a role that he plays for Roarton's undead, although he does believe in the things he says, as previously stated. Still, there is a certain level of manipulation to this, even if it's not malicious; he asks the others to share their rising stories because he's searching for the First Risen, but he never tells them that and puts a different spin on it so they will be more willing to share. He keeps the true nature of his mission secret and not even Amy or Kieren know why he's really come to Roarton. He even outright lies to Amy when she asks him what the Prophet said about their mission. So he is not the most truthful person, and he can be underhanded about achieving his goals.

Simon is also someone who cares very much about making the people that he loves happy. He displays this with Amy by allowing her to think that the two of them are involved, despite his having no romantic interest in her. He is oblivious to the idea that he's leading her on and when confronted with it he rejects that outright, saying that Amy needs love so he shows her love. Ultimately Amy's feelings are hurt by this, though that is not Simon's intention. This desire to make the people he cares about happy is exemplified much more with Kieren.

Simon's romantic relationship with Kieren changes him and they both rub off on each other. In Kieren he finds someone who he believes he has a connection with (likely because they both have the shared life experience of being depression sufferers, they also seem to share an interest in music) and he is quick to try and start a relationship, despite having only known Kieren for a few days at the time. Kieren is the first person we see Simon open up to, and also the first person we see influencing Simon to a large degree. He manages to easily talk Simon out of his plan to free the caged rabids at the health clinic so they can take them and medicate them themselves.

Although he tries to reject Kieren (“I was wrong about you from the start.”) after these events, utterly disgusted with how Kieren makes no attempt to change the status quo, he is unable to resist when Kieren comes back to him and they kiss. After this he chooses to separate his beliefs from Kieren, making no further attempts to convince him to accept his philosophy. More than that, Simon opens his mind and decides to try out Kieren's idea of 'normal,' donning cover-up and going for lunch with Kieren and his family. He is so set on making sure it's a nice normal occasion that he doesn't even rise to the bait when Gary, who is there with Kieren's sister, starts telling stories about how he killed undead during The Rising. No, it's Kieren who gets angry about this, even when Simon tells him to leave it alone, and Kieren who tells the story of rising from his grave the way Simon had encouraged the others to do. This occasion is also when Simon comes to believe Kieren is the First Risen, which only exacerbates the way he worships Kieren and how he's placed him on a pedestal. This probably stems from what Simon sees as Kieren's inner strength; he's been through so much, subjected to so many awful things and yet he's still a good, kind person who isn't really cynical, he hasn't been beaten down by his experiences. Also he manages to fight off Blue Oblivion (the drug undead can take to temporarily become rabid) before he hurts anyone, which causes Simon to describe him as “incredible.”

Although he tries to keep Kieren and his beliefs separate, Simon is unable to do this when he is ordered to kill Kieren to bring about the Second Rising. Of course he becomes incredibly conflicted between his devotion to Kieren and his loyalty to the Prophet, but ultimately his love for (or addiction to) Kieren wins out and this positive influence on him culminates in Simon rejecting the Prophet's religious teachings and the ULA's primary goal of a Second Rising. The script for episode six also implies that Simon's decision is influenced by his witnessing Kieren's father telling his rabid son that he loves him no matter what he is, something Simon never got from his own father. So not only does Simon risk his life to save Kieren (he takes a bullet meant for Kieren that could've easily hit him in the head), but he acts probably knowing that he will be branded a traitor and people will be sent to kill him.

Finally, it should be noted that Simon's betrayal of the ULA doesn't indicate that he's abandoned every belief he ever gained from them. He still believes in undead rights and would fight for them and is still proud of what he is, but his beliefs have been moderated. And of course Kieren comes before all that, as the series leaves us with a Simon who is determined to protect him above all else. Although he's still not entirely truthful, as he avoids telling Kieren about his mission to kill him, or why he went into the city or that the ULA now think Kieren is the First Risen; basically anything that would likely make Kieren angry with him.

Abilities

Undead Abilities:

Cannot be killed except by a piercing blow to the brain, though other wounds that he receives will also not be healed and will be permanent.
No physical sensations, meaning that he can't feel pain or cold/warmth or if anyone touches him. Other people will find his skin is cold.
Doesn't need to eat or drink, in fact he's physically incapable of doing either and vomiting would result if he tries. Though he does seem to require sleep.

Other Abilities:

Moderate combat skills. Simon knows how to fight well enough to defend himself or others, mostly in hand to hand combat, but he very likely couldn't stand up to anyone with lots of experience or training. He's received sword training from Katsa as well, which he's alright at.
He can also play the guitar if someone might give him one ^_^

Magic:

Healing: A simple healing spell, still requires touch as he is novice level. Learned from Clarke Griffin, end of August 2702.

Shard Magic:

Shard Activation: Simon has activated his shard and can keep it on for short periods of time, less so while he is in combat. Learned from Ariadne, end of August 2702.
